Shweik Project
Posted on September 17, 2024

Schweik Project RCJF proudly supports the Schweik Project. The Schweik Project is a group of volunteers who sew adaptive clothing to outfit wounded soldiers
across nine major hospitals. These selfless volunteers return the ability of the wounded to dress themselves, gain independence and restore dignity during their recovery and beyond.

Read the most recent letters from the Israeli Schweik volunteers below.

“I would like to inform you that all the T-shirts which were modified by our volunteers (with extra seams and Velcro) were brought to the wounded soldier’s mother. She was simply happy! Despite everything…His situation is terrible and hopeless, but she really wants to see him as a person, and our clothes give her this opportunity. She just dreamed about it, so that he would be dressed as a person should be. She asked me to convey a huge thank you!”

“My dear Seamstresses! Many thanks to everyone who took part in the urgent alteration of the T-shirts! Thanks to you, we did not leave a single wounded soldier without a sufficient number of T-shirts and even created some stock.

It wasn't easy at all: we had to almost instantly switch to another technology, do everything accurately, precisely and in the shortest possible time! You are amazing! And special thanks to everyone who faithfully and constantly made boxers and shorts, which created a certain reserve for us and allowed us to focus on other much needed items. Also, special thank you to our volunteer carriers who spent the last few weeks delivering fabrics and finished products. We are a great team! And to be honest, we have a unique project!

As an example, I’ll tell you this story:

A wonderful guy who is a wounded soldier. Not only are his fingers with metal rods, but they also had to perform another operation and connected him to a VAC machine, from which a tube goes into the wound. I previously gave him a T-shirt with Velcro on the sides (we had a few for emergencies) – it was a life saver for him, but it was the only one and it got dirty. This was all at the very beginning of the clothing shortage, and this was the only T-shirt he had. When his girlfriend took it off him to wash he had to sit bare-chested in his room all evening. Now here I come with a new T-shirt! It would be difficult to think of a more suitable moment! We immediately put it on him, and I don’t know who was happier - him, his girlfriend or me!

Because of his injury, he must eat with his left hand, the food falls and his T-shirt gets dirty, so they have to wash it often. Ten days have already passed since then, but yesterday in the hospital a man caught up with me in the corridor – it was this young man’s father. He thanked our group profusely for helping his son in this
very practical way to restore his dignity.
