Letter from our soldier: George Zeldkin (Winter 2016)
Posted on September 12, 2017
Dear Donors,
My name is George Zeldkin. I am 26 years old and I live in the Northern city Karmiel, with my girlfriend Yana. I am in good relations with my parents, Anna and Yigal, and I have a little sister named Tali, who is now a 12th grade student and will join the army afterwards. In the following months, I would like to propose to my girlfriend, thus besides working and studying, I also have to plan this complex wedding proposal operation.
Let me tell you about myself:
I made Aliya with my family from the former USSR 20 years ago, and have been living in the same city ever since. As a child I was very active in different types of sports; I used to practice boxing and I was even national champion for several times. I played volleyball in the school team and in the city team. On the 11th grade I joined a training program to be more ready and fit to a combat unit in the army.
At school I majored in Cinema and Television, and when I graduated I was offered to continue learning for two more years and become a practical engineer. I refused this offer because it included a non-combat position in the army, which I did not want. I wanted to join the Israeli Border Police, where my uncle (my father's brother) had served. My uncle, Andrey Zeldkin RIP, was a warrior in the Border Police and was killed in an encounter with terrorists in his base on the tragic date of 09.11.2001.
I was raised on the values of Zionism and Patriotism; therefore it was clear for me that my contribution to the country would be significant. When I finished basic training in the Border Police, I continued to squad commanders’ course. When I finished the course I was positioned in Hebron, as a team commander on the field. A year later I was repositioned to the training base and I was in charge of two classes of recruits. I finished my service as a team commander in the area of Nablus.
After my army service, I joined a special unit in the police, called YaSaM (special patrol unit). The purpose of this unit is to fight severe crimes, stop violent demonstrations and take part in fighting terrorism. My designated role is marksman. I have been working in this unit for 4 years now, and received several Excellency certificates, as the last one was “Independence day excellence”.
This occupation has become my career and in order to continue succeeding, I decided to have a degree in law enforcement in Haifa University. I have only started learning this year, but based on the few lectures I have had so far, everything seems really interesting and it makes me feel confident with my choice. Of course I will keep updating as time goes by.
While studying I also volunteer in an organization called “HaShomer HaChadash” (the new guard) which is an organization aimed at protecting farmers’ lands from stealing, harassment or illegal building, incidents which are happening unfortunately in Israel and causing the farmers to give up on their lands due to financial losses. I have chosen this organization because I care about Israel and its development, and I think it is important to assist these hard – working farmers who are preserving the country’s lands.
Dear donors,
You are making a tremendous change. I want to kindly thank you for giving me this assistance in funding my education. It is by no means taken for granted. It is remarkable to see how the Jewish people are tied together in an inseparable connection, even when the physical distance is enormous. Thanks to you I will be able to graduate from the university, get married and start my own family in Israel, and even more, I will be able to help and contribute to others.
Thank you so much!
Looking forward to get to know you and anxiously waiting for your letter.
Sincerely yours,
George Zeldkin.
