“Boston – Sderot” Community Center. About our project and us. Who are “we”?
Posted on April 1, 2013

1. The Boston’s organization the Russian Jewish Community Foundation (RJCF), invited to a summer camp in Boston 20 children from Sderot, and decided to take care of the children in the future – this was in 2006. The motto of this initiative were the words Inna Rifkin, one of the leaders of the organization and the initiator of the project: "it is not in our power to stop the terror Qassams, but we can give the children their childhood back. We cannot invest in the defense of the Jewish state, but we can invest in the development of these Jewish children.

2. Young Americans, who each year come to Israel as volunteers to work at a summer camp for the children of Sderot, their parents, friends and just good people who donate to support the project.

3. Sveta Shietrit, 31, has lived in Sderot since arriving to Israel since 1996. She graduated from high school, served in the Israel Defense Forces, went to Sderot’s college "Sapir" specializing in social & political studies. While working she graduated with the master's degree. Immediately, after the army Sveta worked in the economic development department of the city, and then went to work on a pilot project specializing in job creation. She has been the head of the Public Education Center "Boston Sderot" since its establishment.

4. Natasha Panaitova, 58 years old, in Israel since 1996, she has lived in Sderot since arriving to Israel. She was a teacher of the Russian language in her "past" life when she lived in Turkmenistan. There Natasha worked at a school and at summer camps, and was active in public life. In Israel Natasha completed studies in social work. She accompanied children on their first trip to Boston, and was instrumental in organizing the community center. She is currently a volunteer at the Center. Full-time Sveta's mom :-).

5. Nathan Shietrit, 37, was born in Sderot and lived there all his life. Nathan works in the municipal service department. On a voluntary basis, he is engaged in landscaping of the center and carries on maintenance work. Full-time Sveta’s husband :-).

6. About 100 children from Sderot attend the center, and do it with great pleasure.

7. Parents of children and other adults are also very happy to attend to our programs.

What is our Community Center? For many it has become a second home
A place where children:
• Learn English and mathematics.
• Indulge in your favorite hobbies and activities, such as, ceramics, dancing (Zumba), self-defense, cooking, and yoga
• Hang out with friends, play, ask for advice or help.
• Spend time with your soul mates.
• Celebrate your birthdays, or just throw a party.
• Take care of their own facility: try and learn how to do repairs themselves

Finally, and probably most importantly – the center is the place where for a half of the year kids are waiting for the beginning of the next summer camp, and then following that another six months, remembering how great it was.
